儀表閥是一種管路附件。它是用來改變通路斷面和介質流動方向，控制輸送介質流動的一種裝置。儀表閥的密封性能是指儀表閥各密封部位阻止介質泄漏的能力，它是儀表閥最重要的技術性能指標。儀表閥的密封部位有三處：啟閉件與閥座兩密封面間的接觸處；填料與閥桿和填料函的配和處；閥體與閥蓋的連接處。其中前一處的泄漏叫做內漏，也就是通常所說的關不嚴，它將影響儀表閥截斷介質的能力。對于截斷閥類來說，內漏是不允許的。后兩處的泄漏叫做外漏，即介質從閥內泄漏到閥外。外漏會造成物料損失，污染環境，嚴重時還會造成事故。對于易燃易爆、有毒或有放射的介質，外漏更是不能允許的，因而儀表閥必須具有可靠的密封性能。
